Temporus Trilogy

Book 1 "Temporus Academy"

Chapter One

The day was beautiful in a soft spoken, shy, sunny disposition kind of way. I’d lived in Fort Hill for just over a year but I did not think I would ever become desensitized to the idyllic nature of the neighborhood. It was safe and homey and there was a friday evening market, (as if to say, well done, you made it through the week, now buy yourself a jar of home-made honey!)

The climate was temperate and the ocean was only two miles away so seagulls could be heard just beyond the calls of chickadees and starlings. Fort Hill was nestled on the edge of privately owned forestland; the benefits outweighed the strangeness and otherwise pretentious notion of a “private forest”; citizens and visitors of Fort Hill got to explore and picnic and play and have secret rendezvous in the luxurious woods and all we had to do was resist the human urge to trash it. The owner of the woods was a complete mystery. I always assumed someone in the neighborhood knew who it was, but it seemed to be an agreed-upon law and courtesy that no one ask. It wasn’t as if it changed anything for any of us to know who exactly was so generous with their wealth of nature.

Fort Hill was home to myself and around four hundred fifty other beings whose primary goal in life was to live happy, simple, beautiful lives. Like I said before, it was a beautiful and shy day, so not one of the four hundred fifty (give or take) of us were expecting the storm that was going to hit that very afternoon...

That's all for now!

(Lights up on an ethereal stage. In the center is a large bed. In the bed, DAN is asleep tossing and turning.)

(JEN enters. She approaches the bed and leans over DAN.)

JEN

(singing)
Sleep little child,
Sleep while you can,
Dream of the dark day,
the day that you ran,
try not to think,
of the darkness behind,
sleep little child,
Sleep will be kind.

(JEN exits into shadows; DAN bolts upright in bed, breathing heavily. Slowly, carefully he lays back down.)

(Lights down)

(Single spotlight on a girl, SEVIE. She looks all around half in wonder, half confusion.)

(DAN enters)

DAN

You know where you are.

SEVIE

Sorry?

DAN

You know where you are. It's not a question, it's a fact. Let your mind take you there.

SEVIE
Take me where?

DAN
Just think. Look. Where are you?

SEVIE
Well…
(As she gazes all around, images form on the walls.)
I'm....I'm at university....in his office…

DAN
Who's office?

SEVIE

How is this possible?

DAN
Who's office?

SEVIE
Who are you?

DAN

I'm a detective.

SEVIE

Oh. Because of what happened...right?

DAN
Yes. Because of what happened.

SEVIE
But....why are we here? Why are-? I'm asleep.

DAN

Hold on a moment Sevie–

SEVIE
I'm asleep! This is a dream!

DAN

Sevie, calm down, wait a minute–

SEVIE
You know my name?!

DAN
Just listen to me–!

SEVIE
What are you doing here?!? Did I ask you in?!

DAN
This is very important, tell me: who does this office belong to??

SEVIE
I–I don't–I'm not sure–

DAN
You know whose it is, just tell me–

SEVIE
I don't remember asking you in! You're not supposed to be here! I'm not telling you anything!

DAN
Wait–wait Severina!

SEVIE
DON'T CALL ME THAT!

(There is a cacophony of lights and color.
The lights fade into black.)

(From the black a voice calls out softly.)

CARVER
What's my name Severina?

SEVIE
Dr...Carver....Glenn.

CARVER
Thank you....I had almost forgot....

That's all for now!
